of a trainee injured during a training accident. the officer is not believed to be a bpd member and is currently being treated. we will keep you informed as information develops. please keep that trainee in your prayers. again, at this point, the identity of the male or female trainee is still not known to the media. we are still waiting for a press conference. we all arrived here around 3:15. the mayor arrived shortly after we got here. they have been inside quite sometime it is unclear what they are discussing. we did hear the helicopters land and take off again. again, that trainee is still inside. we'll stay here and update you as soon as we have the information. back to you on tv hill. >> okay, jessica, thank you. we'll continue to follow this story throughout the night. tonight, investigators are trying to figure out why a university of maryland graduate student shot his housemates in college park. wjz is live with complete coverage. adam may, finding out more about the shoot are.

but first, investigator mike hellgren has details about the early morning shooting. mike? >> reporter: mary, we're just a short walk from campus. neighbors, witnesses describe a chaotic scene. the shooter suffered from some sort of mental illness and had suffered from it for approximate a year. police say his victims had very little warning. and he was heavily armed. >> reporter: police say 23-year- old devon maurice greene, an accomplished university student from the university of maryland was suffering from mental illness, before he shot two of his rooment mates and -- roommates and then himself. it happened at their home. >> i heard these gun shots. going pop, pop, pop. >> they also discovered a bag of weapons to include a baseball bat, a machete, a fully-loaded, semi automatic handgun and ammunition. >> reporter: green was an

undergraduate at morgan state university in baltimore, before continuing his education in college park. he was, by many accounts, a student with a brilliant mind. authorities say he lit several fires at the home, waking his roommates, just before 1:00 a.m. then he pulled a gun from his wasteband. >> it was a chaosic -- chaotic scene as the bullets were flying out the window of this suv. >> one of the bullets went straight through the neighbor's window. >> i know. she had been right there. she had the gun. >> the surviving victim was able to run away from the home and call a neighbor for help. detectives have been able to speak with him at some point. and they will continue to do so, once he is conditioned to do that. >> reporter: the university's president couldn't say whether the school received a warning about green. but he said the school ramped up services for those who need help. >> it is an incredible tragedy. and our hearts go out to his family, his parents, and his loved ones. >> reporter: the victim who

died is 22 years old. his name is steven raine. he's from silver spring. police also tell us they responded to the home two times before. once for burglary. another time for a prank call. never for anything of this magnitude. reporting live in college park, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. kai? >> mike, thank you. mike hellgren reporting. wjz's complete coverage continues, live in baltimore county. adam may is there, at the shooter's family home and investigates who devon green was. adam? >> reporter: kai, a lot of people have been coming and going from the family home here all day in rosedale. folks trying to make sense of this tragedy. >> reporter: disbelief on golden ring court in rosedale, neighbors shocked to hear the smart kid from this area, shot his college park roommates. >> i'm very sad for them. they're a very nice family. >> reporter: wjz had learned devon green had learned one of nasa's top interns.

he was interested in robotic sciences. green recently graduated from morgan state university in 2012. he was now pursuing his master's at college park. green's family declined comment to wjz but told police critical information. >> detectives learned that the shooter had been suffering from a mental illness. the family let our detectives know that this suspect had this condition for at least a year and that in the past, he had been prescribed medication for this mental illness. >> reporter: like police, many neighbors here want to know where green got the guns. >> i saw you here every morning, when you turn on the news. somebody is getting shot up. . >> oh, yes. >> reporter: and now it's your neighbor involved in it. >> yeah. it's really a shock to me. it really is. >> reporter: and we can get -- did get some new information on the source of that gun from state police. they say greene was the registered owner of the 9- millimeter handgun that was

heavily-armed christopher dorner. this is the former lapd officer who has been on the run since last week, when he allegedly shot and killed three people, including a police officer. now, authorities have been searching for the big bear area since his burned-out truck was located there. big bear is about 100 miles east of los angeles in the mountains. a massive gunfire has been under way during the last hour. there are reports that two officers have been shot and wounded. kcal reporter carl evans was nearly caught in the crossfire. he recorded this on his cell phone. >> the associated press is reporting dorner broke into a cabin at big bear, then tied up a couple. one of them was able to get away and call police. dorner threatened warfare against the lapd. he is seeking revenge for being fired back in 2008. once again, a gun battle under way, in the search for

christopher dolan. that is the very latest, live in new york. i'm alexis christoforous. now, back to you. >> and wjz will keep you updated on this still- developing story throughout our newscast. a tanker truck, carrying gasoline, carries fire in annapolis. fire officials say the 3,000- gallon tanker burned this afternoon in the 7600 block of edgewood road. firefighters responded. they put out the blaze. the maryland department of the environment estimated how much fuel ran into back creek. no injuries have been reported. the cause is under investigation. we go from cloudy, gray skies, to sunny, shiny, blue skies. here's a look at sky eye chopper 13. meteorologist bernadetteed woos is out back. and bob turk has the weather, updating our numbers. it was a very warm afternoon. look now. still in the low 50s. lots of places. d.c. at 53. we're at 53. 50, pax river. cooler, but not even compared

to normal. 43 out in oakland. now, there is precip headed our way. you look at radar, there is a batch of rain to the south. they had a little snow over portions of oklahoma and texas this morning. it will get somewhat colder tomorrow. and that could set the stage for some frozen precip. a little more on that, bernadette woods in the outback. bernadette? >> that's right. the storm is going to come in the form of rain. but as we head to the storm, it's going to change over to snow. it's going to be a sloppy mess, making its way across the state here. temperatures are getting up to 40 tomorrow. it's been warm out there. a lot of this is going to melt on the ground. but as we head through the evening hours and overnight hours, the storm quickly moves through. and the sun has set. there is a chance for accumulation. around most of the area, coating to an inch. farther south you go, basically nothing out of this. but out of the northern counties, 1 to maybe as much as 3 inches there. now, again, the best chance for accumulation would be after sunset tomorrow evening. generally 6:00 or later. this is something we're

watching. we'll keep you updated on. now, back inside. >> thank you, bernadette. we now know the name of the man who shot and killed two women inside a wilmington, delaware courthouse. thomas matusawitz, police say the 68-year-old was the ex- father-in-law of the one of the women killed. they say he walked into the courthouse yesterday and opened fire. the shooter then exchanged gunfire with courthouse officers and was killed. police say the ex-wife and her friend were at the courthouse for child support hearing, regarding the shooter's son. a teacher's assistant in harford county is charmed with sex with a minor-- charged with sex with a minor and faces prison time. the victim is one of her students. wjz is live in harford county. rochelle ritchie has details on this story. rochelle? >> reporter: good evening, mary. the victim is a sophomore at north harford high school. and the teacher's assistant who admits to having sex with him is a 35-year-old woman. >> reporter: these charging documents out of harford county

give police -- explicit details of the sexual relationship between amanda kay miller and a 15-year-old boy at the high school. charges ing documents -- charging documents show the relationship started in december of last year. and shows a number of texts being exainched. >> they subsubsequently charged her with third and fourth- degree sex offenses, as well as abuse of a minor. >> i'm very upset about it. because it's -- trying to teach my kids what is right and wrong. that&they have teachers doing this kind of stuff. >> reporter: students who knew miller said nothing about her seemed to draw concern. >> just a nice lady, fun to be around. she got along with the kids just fine. >> reporter: investigators say miller would take the student home at times and have sex with her in her car, right in his driveway. wjz asked her about the charges against her. no one answered.

wolves were attacking her pets. >> reporter: there were photographs of smoke and joe and billy jean. but that's all she has of her pets. saturday night, the goats were killed inside their pen in this pasadena neighborhood. >> i saw what i thought was a wolf over top of my dead goat. >> manning called her next-door neighbor for help. he brought a gun. >> and it looked like it was being aggressive. so to protect himself and protect us being out here, he shot it. >> reporter: it was only then they realized it was the wolf's closest cousin, a husky. on the internet, there are sites dedicated to the breed, known for their intelligence, and escape artist abilities, depicted on you tube. police say the husky that was killed dug out of its yard and joined another large dog that was also running loose, which was shot at and may have been hit. >> reporter: we've located the owner of the diseelsed dog. that dog has no prior history with animal control. and we're looking into the second dog. >> they really are a wonderful breed. >> reporter: anita is a dog

like a couple of rows behindne. >> reporter: bill picked it up and his friends told him to turn it in. >> i said, you really think if i it into anybody here at the super dome, they're going to find anyone? i have a better chance of finding them. i wrapped it in a paper towel and put it in my pocket. >> reporter: tee he took the memory card out of it and posted pictures on his facebook. and soon the photos were shared more than 5,000 times. >> it was starting to blow up with people saying, i know this person. >> reporter: the couple in the photos also started hearing from lots of friends. >> i was getting phone calls and texts. and facebook messages, saying that they had found my camera. >> reporter: john poling and his girlfriend, sandy burns, live only 15 minutes from bill. and last night, they met to exchange thanks and the camera. >> i can't thank bill enough. i mean, there's not a lot of people in this world, i think, today, that would take the time and effort to do what bill did.

we'll get down to freezing overnight. skies will still be rather clear. 44, westminster. 50 in bel air. and 48 over on kent island. we have a west wind right now. tomorrow, the winds go back to the east. that will bring in some atlantic moisture, to keep us above freezing. until late in the day or evening. winds go back to the north and northwest. that will start bringing in colder air aloft. and we'll see rain mixing in with wet snowflakes. and eventually, it will end as a period of snow, which could accumulate mainly in the city. maybe on the grass. and maybe 1, 2, or as much as 3 inches possible across extreme northern maryland. we're talking on the northern p.a. border. not really that cold at all. and the really super cold, arctic air has moved into central canada. 53. 41 in boston. yes, the snow is melting up there. but there's still plenty of it to clean up. south of us, shower activity. a little snow this morning from new mexico into portions of

oklahoma. that pretty much has dissipated. but this rain, shield will move into our region. low pressure will move off the virginia capes around here. and quickly move out to sea. so a period of rain in the afternoon. once this storm gets right to about this location. it will kick back some moisture. but it will also bring in colder air coming in from new york and ontario. that and could change us to a bit of snow for a while before it clears out. but probably after midnight or so. then the sun returns. it will all be gone here on thursday. once again, the heaviest accum -- accumulations right across maryland. couple of inches expected there in the city. don't expect to see much at all. particularly on the roads. because the roads are very warm right now. east winds, 10 to 15 knots. small craft on the bay tomorrow. bay temp around 39 degrees. it has come up. so tonight, let's go go with partly cloudy. down the freezing mark. tomorrow, low 40s. some rain in the afternoon, and after dinner, probably see some wet snow mixing in. and probably will end as a

with authorities in the mountain area of big bear, california. he burglarized a home, tied up a couple and stole their car. one of the victims was able to get away and call police. two officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire. today, they were air-lifted to a hospital the no word on their condition right now. at this hour, dorner is still not objected to be -- not believed to be in custody. wjz will update you on this still-developing story. heartbreaking accounts from victims of human trafficking, in a state committee senate hearing today. political reporter pat warren explains, they are testifying on behalf of a bill, to protect victims under 21. they are victims of predators. >> like somebody has taken everything that you have, all the breath out of your body, everything thaw have, for them. it's terribility. >> reporter: calanny told her story to the senate committee

makes his state of the union address tonight, high school student jack andracca will be watching from a very good seat. the 16-year-old student was shocked when the white house called him last night. >> i'm like, hello. and they're like, we'd like you to sit in the box. first lady for the state of the union. and i run around screaming. and the person on the other end of the phone probably thinks i'm crazy now. >> he was chosen by president obama because of his work in the field of cancer er research. in he won the intel national science and engineering, for creating a smple s. simple, less expensive and accurate way to develop pancreatic cancer. >> taking piece of paper costs $ 3 sends and runs on paper. and diagnosises pancreatic cancer with 100% accuracy. but it could be used for any disease. >> reporter: while he's already received a lot of recognition for his work, he says this

honor is almost unimaginable. >> sitting there, like in front row seats with the first lady will be absolutely incredible. because it's like a once in a lifetime opportunity. and i'm so excited about it. >> reporter: although jack's family is traveling with him to washington, they'll be watching the state of the union from the white house. reporting live from glen burnie, monique griego. >> also,leer this year, jack got to meet former president bill clinton. our coverage tonight for the state of the union address begins at 9:00. bwi is setting a passenger record for the third year in a row. governor martin o'malley says 22.6 million passengers used the airport last year. that's an increase of 1.3% over 2011, when about 22.4 million passengers flew through the airport. in july, the airport set a monthly record. last year, officials say impacted that increase of passengers.

another country. >> i don't think it matter where is they're from, as long as as long as they open thelogically to welcoming in as many people as possible. >> reporter: cardinal peter turkson from ghana, could be the first black pope. cardinal leandro sandri of argentina is considered the top candidate from south america. pope benedict xvi is stepping down because the 85-year-old said he no longer has the physical or mental strength to lead. >> reporter: the vatican just disclosed that pope benedict received a pacemaker before he became leader of the catholic church in 2005 and recently, secretly had the battery replaced. >> reporter: there is no word yet when the conclave to elect a new pope will gather at the vatican. but church officials say they would like to have his replacement before easter at the end of march. the vatican says the holy father will have no role in picking his successor.

it will be pretty cold. the united nations security council is strongly condemning north korea's latest test. ines ferre has the latest from the u.n. upon. >> reporter: the security council condemn the testing of the nuclear bomb. this happened hours after north korea tested a bomb. it caused a jolt of a 4.2 magnitude quake. according to intelligence reports, the country is now planning to test other problems. >> north korea does not and will not benefit from violating international law. >> u.s. ambassador susan rice called this a threat to international security. >> the u.n. must deliver a

the carnival triumph has been floating aimlessly since an engine fire sunday. 3800 passengers were left with limited supplies of hot food and working bathrooms. another carnival ship has since dropped off more supplies for everybody. but passengers say the ride is still very far from comfortable. >> they're keeping us fed pretty well. the worst part is the bathrooms. there's there's no water. you can't really flush. so everyone is going in little plastic baggies and putting it inside their room. >> oh, my goodness. did she just say that? the cruise ship is being towed to mobile, alabama. carnival officials expect it to arrive on thursday. >> plastic baggies? how does that work? a u.n. agency is moving to stop all passenger planes from transporting large aircraft batteries. the move comes after one battery caught fire on a boeing 787 last month. it would limit batteries shipped on planes.
